Welcome to American Film Scripts Online

American Film Scripts Online contains 1,009 scripts by 1,062 writers together with detailed, fielded information on the scenes, characters and people related to the scripts. In addition, the database includes facsimilie images for more than 500 of these screenplays. Most of the scripts have never been published before, and nowhere else are they available online.
American Film Scripts Online uses PhiloLogic software, developed at the University of Chicago, to enable in-depth browsing and searching of both the bibliographic and the full-text elements within the database.  We have recently upgraded the PhiloLogic software, enhancing performance and giving the collection a fresh new look.  We have improved the search engine for better performance and introduced new toolbar navigation for easier browsing, but all other functionality of the collection remains the same.

Sample Pages from Father's Little Dividend (1951)

"There was some talk after this picture was released of doing still another sequel?- in fact we had several conferences on it.  One day we picked up the newspaper to read that Joan Bennetts husband in a fit of jealousy had shot his agent in the groin.  That was the end of this series.  A.H."

Sample Pages from The Gold Rush (1925)

The title page from Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush shows the words 'in three scenes' changed to 'in three acts'.   This and the overall layout of the script suggest it was meant to be considered as a formal dramatic work.

Sample Pages from Martin Scorsese's Mean Streets (1973)

he pages include annotations by Jonothan Taplin, the producer.

Produced in collaboration with the University of Chicago.
